Calculate optimal disk cluster size with Cluster Size Calculator! Cluster Size Calc allows you to scan files and folders and compare their efficiency in a variety of [[data cluster]] sizes. This works great if you have a folder (and subfolders) of files that will be moved to a new drive. It will help you determine what cluster size to use on that HDD in order to use the least amount of clusters (indexes), and waste the least amount of space.

Just clicking Scan now renders a crash error.

Then once clicking ok the application remains open and when you click a folder/disk to scan it says scanning yet it does nothing.
To confirm such..
Lauch app, Select folder/disk then scan and it does as should.
Also the export save as type is empty

Ok, the error is that there is no selected path. The program requires that the user select a folder or drive to scan. The problem here is that the scan button should not be enabled until a valid path is chosen.
Without a path chosen and the crash, continuing the application will not produce any valid information. So if the user encounters a problem like this, it really should force the user to quit the program instead of lead them on that some sort of data will be produced for them.
I also see a few design problems in the interface and progress reporting as I use this program again.
I am going to fix these problems and post a update. Thanks for the bug report on this app and the contact form.
I found another issue:
Disk has one root folder and all the content is under this one root folder. Explorer says:
258’623 files
18’815 folders
Size: 79’811’471’668 bytes
Size on disk: 80’388’505’600 bytes
i.e. wasted cca 577MB (NTFS, 4KB cluster)
But your program says:
598’104 file count
50 MB Wasted space @ 4KB Cluster size
Shadow copies are disabled (if that matters). Maybe some linked folder recursion causes the troubles?? (i’m not aware of such, but can’t rule that out). Any advise?
I am not exactly sure, but here are a few things it could be. Possibly you have very heavy fragmentation, or you are not under the administrator account and therefore cannot access some files via explorer?
This program only estimates the wasted space according to your drives cluster size, file count and total file sizes. It does not analyze clusters or files beyond taking their size and calculating that into your current cluster size, and reporting on wasted space in their optimal least wasteful condition (which may or may not be the case on your system).
So while this cant give an accurate reading of your current system, it can give a fairly accurate estimate of what your next storage layout can achieve once you copy over those same files to a newly formatted drive.

And the 404 not found is probably something common right now on this site. I am switching hosts for the 3rd time in about half a year and im trying to port over the content. I have a few other projects that take priority over Cluster Size Calculator, but I planned on re-creating most of the freeware here once my new site is completed.
